What is a PEBCAC error?
The most common PEBCAC error produces an undesired result at the output device ie monitor, printer. The error always originates as a result of improper usage of the input device ie. keyboard and/or mouse by the mediary, which is almost always located between the chair and computer. (mobile units may not contain a chair)
Once identified, can I fix a PEBCAC error?
In certain rare cases these errors can be corrected, but almost always reoccur. Therefore the best resolution is to replace the faulty mediary. Most IT professionals will consider the mediary to be an FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) as the repair costs are usually more expensive than replacement costs.
What is the costs and process for PEBCAC elimination.
The costs can vary widely from a few hundred dollars up to several thousand dollars, as there are numerous resources for obtaining mediary upgrades. If you have a local community college you can inquire with an admissions specialist by explaining your frequency and type of output errors, and they can recommend the appropriate course of action. An alternative is to check with a State University, but the costs may be much higher. Some institutions may even offer online solutions, but they are not recommended, as they will likely result in more PEBCAC and some ID-10-T errors as well.
What if I can't afford upgrade or replacement costs?
When forced to use a free or inexpensive FRU, you may consider a child or teenager (age 4-13 will probably do). FRU's in this range will typically perform well, but should not be used as a long term or permanent replacement, as their memory is unstable. These replacements should not be used in commercial situations as they may result in legal implications.
